Are you traveling to Cologne by car? Then you need an environmental sticker for Cologne. Without this sticker you are not allowed to drive into the Cologne environmental zone. The police check Strictly, and those who drive without a green environmental sticker risk a fine of € 80 plus administration costs. Foreign motorists are also required to purchase an environmental badge.
The Environmental sticker – known in Germany as Umweltplakette or Feinstaubplakette – proves that your car meets German emission requirements. With the official vignette of Duitsemilieusticker.nl you can drive through the entire Umweltzone of Cologne without any problems.
The city introduced an environmental zone in 2008 together with Berlin and Hanover as one of the first German cities. The goal: to improve air quality and reduce particulate matter emissions. Initially, red, yellow and green stickers were valid, but since July 1, 2014, only vehicles with a green environmental sticker are allowed into the Cologne environmental zone. An important measuring point that underlined the need for the environmental zone is the station at Clevischer Ring in Cologne-Mülheim. For many years, the highest concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) in the city were measured here. These excesses were a direct reason to implement stricter rules and expand the zone.
The answer is simple: yes, always-even if you have an electric car. You cannot enter the zone without a sticker. Even a short drive to a parking space or a downtown hotel can result in a fine. Only if you drive around the city on the highways and do not turn towards the center, you do not need a sticker.Don't you want to risk it? Then order your environmental sticker in advance.

The map of the Cologne environmental zoneshows that the area has expanded significantly over the years.
start with only the Altstadt (inner city)
expansion to a large part of the city
expanded again; today the zone includes ca. 137 km2, including boroughs such as Rodenkirchen, Lindenthal, Ehrenfeld, Nippes, Mülheim and Kalk
Important: the A1, A3 and A4 motorways are largely outside the zone. If you stay alone on these roads, a sticker is not mandatory. But be careful: if you accidentally take an exit towards the center, you still need a valid environmental sticker.
At the city limits and in access roads to Cologne there are traffic signs with "Umweltzone" and the symbol of the green sticker. The environmental zone covers almost the entire city area within the motorways around Cologne (including the A1, A3 and A4 form the outer ring). Do you drive into the city to visit the center, Stadium, fair or the Cathedral? Then you will almost certainly end up in the environmental zone.
Not all vehicles get a sticker. As a rule of thumb:
Petrol cars from before 1993 are not eligible.
Diesel cars from before 2006 will be banned.
Do you have a younger car? Then you can almost always buy an environmental sticker for Cologne. For classic cars with an H license plate or certain special vehicles, there are exceptions. These rules were drawn up by the German Federal Environment Ministry.
In addition to the mandatory green Cologne environmental sticker, a blue E-sticker also exists in Germany for electric cars and some plug-in hybrids. This sticker is not a replacement for the environmental badge, but an additional marking with which you are eligible for benefits.
In Cologne, this means that electric vehicles can park for free or at a discount in various places, and that there are special parking spaces at charging stations that are reserved exclusively for cars with an E-sticker. You can recognize this by signs with "E-Fahrzeuge frei".
Please note: even if you have this blue sticker, you must always carry a green environmental sticker to be allowed to drive into the Cologne environmental zone without a fine.
